Part 1: I decide to make a blog

Hello all (some(very few)), and welcome to this, an attempt to blog the construction of a substantial costume project.

I've been an amateur and later self employed costume maker for more than ten years. A few years ago, a friend of mine made a spectacular and uber complex costume of a Skeksis from the movie Dark Crystal. Inspired, I decided to take on a similarly complex project:

This is Stranger, from the game Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath on Xbox and, more recently, various download services. Why Stranger? Well, apart from being a huge fan of the game, it's a costume with enormous potential for really stretching my skills and learning completely new ones along the way. The hope is to build him with a programmable animatronic rig in the head, authentic-looking weathered clothing, semi-flexible armour, a fully realised (if not working) crossbow, and generally make it as close to movie quality as is possible on an amateur budget and skill set. The plan is to then enter it in various costume contests and try and get it seen by as many people as possible

Will I manage? Who knows, I'm as dedicated as possible and really excited by the project, but anything can happen and the best laid plans can go arway. Whatever happens, I plan to document it in something approaching detail, and hopefully be of interest to other fans and other costume makers
